Saturday, July 30 - Sunday, August 7
This trip is currently full.
Itinerary: TBA; but as a rough idea we will probably head up the Oodnadatta track to Mt Dare. Through to Dalhousie Springs then take the French line to Birdsville via Big Red. Birdsville will mark the end of the official trip. Those who need to get back can head off. Most likely we will spend another week to come home via Innamincka. You are welcome to come along if you are interested and have the time. If anyone has a particular interest in seeing something along the track let me know and we can try to fit it in.
Fuel: Fuel is normally readily available along the Oodnadatta Track (Marree, William Creek, Oodnadatta) and Mt Dare. We will re-fuel at Mt Dare and then there will be no fuel until Birdsville (505km). You will need to make sure you carry enough fuel for this section. Remember fuel consumption in the desert will be in my experience at least 25% higher than highway driving so factor that into your calcs and then allow for some contingency as well in case we need to detour at Eyre Creek for example.
Water: You will need to carry enough water for 5 days. We can fill up with water at One O’Clock Creek on the way into Dalhousie. Parks have a bore and tank there with very good water.
Food: You will need enough food to get you through to Birdsville (approx. 8 days). Some of the stop have some food available but its pretty limited.
Camping: Sorry but no campers or caravans on this trip. The desert is not suitable for campers or vans. You will need a tent/swag or similar.
Permits: as we will be travelling through Simpson Desert you will need a Desert parks Pass. You can order these online (https://www.parks.sa.gov.au/book-and-pay/parks-passes/park-passes-online) or at Belair NP. $178 unless you already have purchased a Desert Parks Pass in the last 12 months +2 months grace. Then you can just do a renewal for $107.
Vehicle Requirements: All terrain tyres in good condition will be required. A lift would be an advantage but not essential. UHF radio fitted in the car. Recovery equipment. Min one spare tyre and tyre repair kit. Compressor etc. Sand flags will need to be fitted through the desert. Basic tool kit and spares (you may want to consider things like radiator hoses, fan belts, fuses).
